Description of Levels

LEVEL 1 - Nritta Beginner

This is the very start of your training at Arpan. You will learn the first learning block in the technique and theory of dance. For Bharatanatyam, this includes the following:
  • Nritta - Groups I to V
  • Theory - Samyuta Hasta, Asamyuta Hasta, Shirobheda, Drishti bheda and Greeva bheda

LEVEL 2 - Nritta Intermediate

In this course, you have started off on your basic technique and are already comfortable with dancing in different mandalas. You will now add another 40 odd adavus into your repertoire of adavus:
  • Nritta - Groups VI to X
  • Theory - Mandala Bheda, Viniyogas - Pataka till kartarimukha, Jaathis

LEVEL 3 - Nritta Advanced

You will finish the last leg of your technique classes, learn how to use adavus in different counting sequences and learn special movements created by Joyce Paul to add the extra flourish to your technique:
  • Nritta - Groups XI to XV + Phrases from the Joyce Paul technique
  • Theory - Viniyogas - Mayoora till katakamukha

LEVEL 4 - Margam Beginner

In this level, you will be introduced to the repertoire sequence of Bharatanatyam. Traditionally this is referred to as a margam. Some of the first few pieces you will learn in this path are Alarippu, Pushpanjali, Kavuthvam etc followed by jatiswaram and shabdam.

For every piece in the repertoire you will learn the mathematical annotations, basic musicality, lyrics and its interpretation aside from the physical execution.

LEVEL 5 - Margam Intermediate

In this level, you will be introduced to repertoire pieces with intermediate levels of complexity. Some examples of pieces you might learn are keerthanam, javali and thillana

For every piece in the repertoire you will learn the mathematical annotations, basic musicality, nattuvangam, lyrics and its interpretation aside from the physical execution.

LEVEL 6 - Margam Advanced

In this level, you will be introduced to repertoire pieces with advanced levels of complexity. Some examples of pieces you might learn are ashtapadi, varnam, padam, dashavataram etc. 

For every piece in the repertoire you will learn the mathematical annotations, basic musicality, nattuvangam, lyrics and its interpretation aside from the physical execution. You will also be introduced to the art of choregraphy and what it takes to build an idea into physical reality.

LEVEL 7 - Post Margam/Arangetram

In this level, you will be introduced to repertoire pieces outside of your basic margam that are more complex in terms of content and structure. 

At this level, you will spend more time on choregraphy and create your own pieces. You will learn more complex mathematical annotations, nattuvangam, lyrics and its interpretation aside from the physical execution. You will also contribute to teaching at ARPAN to learn teaching skills.

Master | Personal Intensives with Choreographer

These sessions are exclusively with Dr. Joyce Paul Siamak. At this level, you are honing on skills in each area that you already have substantial knowledge in. A lot of work here is self-driven and research oriented under the guidance of Joyce Akka. For new choreographies, you will work closely with her to see the magic of how works appear our of nothing. You will conceive and execute your own ideas and works as well as conduct shows.

Special Classes 

This offer allows you to focus on any one aspect of learning dance. You can be at any level of your learning at Arpan. You would like to focus on one aspect of your learning and would like some personal time to reflect and learn in a focussed manner. These are usually 1:1 classes with the team and can be in the following areas.

  • Theory – Viniyogas, bhangas, costumes, colours, dieties, Anga prayoga etc

  • Relationship with music – exploring the close and intimate relationship of music and dance

  • Nattuvangam – Learning the  art of nattuvangam and making your own jathis

  • Choreography -  working on bringing nascent ideas to life on stage
